WZOA-TV[]

WZOA-TV 1954

On March 3, 1954, the station premiered on the air as WZOA-TV, broadcast on VHF channel 7, under the ownership of the Plotagon Broadcasting Network. WZOA-TV took over NBC network programming from former affiliate WPCU-TV (channel 2, now PBS member station WPPB), as its radio station WZOA-AM has been a longtime affiliation with the NBC Red Network, and assumed a secondary affiliation with the DuMont Television Network for the remaining two years of that network's existence. DuMont was removed from the station's secondary affiliation in June 1956 (two months before the demise of the DuMont network), and WZOA-TV became the exclusive NBC affiliate for the next four decades.

WKPL (-TV)[]

1970-1971[]

In 1969, the Plotagon Broadcasting Network purchased WKBA-TV from the Peak Family Institute which began to focus exclusively on radio. However, because the FCC still did not allow duopoly at the time, The Plotagon Address (owner of the local newspaper in the area) bought WZOA-TV on December 27 of that year, returning The Plotagon Address to the television business after its former station, WIER-TV (now a CBS affiliate), was purchased by UWN in 1952.

Because FCC rules at the time prohibited television and radio stations in the same market under different ownership from sharing the same callsign, particularly after Western Radio purchased WZOA-AM in 1968, WZOA-TV adopted its current new callsign, WKPL-TV. Their 1969 logo while still under WZOA-TV remained until 1971.

1971-1973[]

1973-1976[]

WKPL-TV 1973

In August 1974, due to new FCC rules prohibiting joint ownership of newspapers and broadcast outlets in the same market, WKPL-TV employees formed a group called Kanalon Broadcasting System. Led by general manager Ted Gukel and the station's longest-serving editor Jerig Brokaw, the employee group purchased the station from The Plotagon Address, with the deal closing on April 28, 1975. After the acquisition, WKPL-TV effectively became the first (and only) station in the US to be acquired by an employee-investor group (which was later followed by the acquisitions of WWL-TV in New Orleans and CHEK-TV in Victoria, British Columbia by a group of employees in 1989 and 2009, respectively). the "-TV" suffix was dropped from the call sign in 1975, so the station became simply WKPL.

In May 1988, Kanalon Broadcasting System merged with Central Broadcasting America and MBN American Broadcasting to become the Independent Television Association (later renamed Ametech Broadcasting in 1997) as a result of restructuring. The resulting merger made WKPL the first (and only) ITA station affiliated with a Big Three network, and the first NBC affiliate station owned by the company.

1992-2006[]

This logo continued to be used when the station adopted Fox 7 as its branding until 2006.

On mid-September 1993, ITA sold WKPL, its only NBC-affiliated station, to New Network Television, retained the heavy investment in the station's news department and branding from its previous owner. In May 1995, New Network was purchased by a private equity firm and transformed into a company focused on multicultural radio stations, thus WKPL was sold once again to New World Communications on November 18, 1995.

1996-1997[]

WKPL-TV 1996

In late May 1996, ahead of an affiliation swap at Plotagon City, WKPL dropped nearly all NBC branding in favor of temporary NewsTV 7 branding (which returned to red after 2 years of using the blue variant) and aired most of its syndicated programming, documentary-based reality series, and off-network sitcoms in each of the network's afternoon and primetime lineup slots. As a result, NBC programming in the daytime and primetime slots that precedes channel 7 is aired on WYAK-TV (channel 14), which also preempts some Fox network programming in favor of airing nearly all of the NBC programming that is preceded by this station.

2 months later, on July 16, 1996, WKPL exchanged affiliations with Fox charter affiliate WYAK-TV with channel 7 becoming a Fox affiliate, becoming one of the first station in Plotagon City to undergo an affiliate swap prior to an affiliate swap between WPC-TV (ABC), WKBA-TV (UWN), and WIER-TV (CBS) two days later and the last station from New World to switch affiliations from the big three networks to Fox before News Corporation purchased New World outright on July 17 and the merger was completed on January 22, 1997, making WKPL the station owned and operated by Fox, as well as being the network's second owned station in Plotagon City after WIER-TV from 1952-1996.

This logo branding, first seen on sister station WTVT in Tampa, currently in use by most of the Fox O&Os, is based on the Fox News logo; with their website names ("myfox(city name).com") based on the domain for the social network Myspace, which former Fox parent News Corporation briefly owned.

On July 19th, 2005, Seward Communications Sold WKPL To Fox Itself.

WKPL-TV 2020

On June 17, 2022, Medianow Corporation assumed most of the assets and operational control of WKPL under a shared services agreement with Fox Television Stations, which continues to maintain the station's license, with Medianow's MBN O&O station WNNY as SSA partner. The takeover officially occurred on September 8, 2022. WKPL continued to use the standard Fox O&O graphics package after Medianow took control of the station.
