Channel 8 first went on the air as WPFB-TV on July 2, 1981 at 5:15 a.m., with the station's first program being Boston Sunrise. Originally owned by J. Davis Broadcasting, WPFB-TV debuted as an independent station, with its programming consisting of syndicated programming missed by other market stations, barter programming, and infomercials, as well as several networks shows that were either preempted or not aired by WBZ-TV (channel 4), WCVB-TV (channel 5), and WNAC-TV (channel 7; then WNEV-TV, now independent station WHDH).

1985-1987[]

On October 9, 1986, WPFB-TV became a Fox charter affiliate for a temporary period until the network moved its affiliation to WFXT (channel 25) on January 19, 1987. The station's logo looks similar to the logo the Fox O&O station used from 1986-1987.

1987-1990[]

WGDM-TV logo 1987

On January 20, 1987, WPFB-TV returned to being an independent station after its Fox affiliate transferred to WFXT which it acquired on December 31, 1986. The station maintained its Big 8 branding, designed by Western Design, which was also used for URS-TV in the Seahaus.

WMSN-TV[]

1990-2006[]

WIER-TV 1964

In June 1990, WPFB-TV unveiled its famous "8" logo symbol, which it shared with WIER-TV at Plotagon City from 1964 to 2005 and changed callsign to WMSN-TV (an abbreviation for Massachusetts Super News) as part of a major investment in the station's news department and the station's adaptation to a news-intensive schedule. After the sale to Microsoft in mid-1993 (which marked the first time an American multinational technology company had forayed into broadcasting station ownership), WMSN-TV changed its abbreviation to The Microsoft Network and began to become an independent all-news station. Later, with the launch of MSNBC (under a strategic partnership between NBC and Microsoft) in 1996, WMSN-TV became MSNBC's network partner for Boston, joining sister station KMSN-TV (now KYMS-TV) in Minnesota.

1993-1996[]

WIER-TV 1971

A variant of the "8" symbol, known as the Circle 8, was first launched as the primary logo from 1993 and also used by WIER-TV from 1971 to 1994.

1996-1998[]

1998-2002[]

WSBC-TV 1990

In May 1998, the station changed its station identity colors, ditching blue in favor of a new color, purple-pink gradients, new 3D designs, and a new graphic look. 3 months later, WGDM-TV became an MBN affiliate on August 24, 1998, as part of the network's long-term affiliation deal with Microsoft that also saw its sister station KYMS-TV in Minneapolis–St. Paul renews his affiliation with the network. On the same switch date, the network's original charter affiliate, WYN-TV (channel 11), became The WN affiliate for the Boston market, while WCXS-TV (channel 10) became a multicultural independent station.

2002-2006[]

2006-2010[]

WSBC-TV 2005

In August 2005, WMSN-TV unveiled a new logo, dropping the "Square 8" and gradient designs in favor of the minimalist and revived Circle 8, but still retaining the mix of pink-purple color. This logo design has also been used by WIER-TV since 2005, minus the CBS logo.

In May 2010, Microsoft sold The MSN Television Network, including WMSN-TV, to Monserrat Broadcasting Network. WMSN-TV then reverted to a general independent station (with entertainment, sitcom, and syndicated programming added to the station several months prior to the sale of the station) and relaunched as WGDM-TV on December 17, 2010 as a synergistic effort by the companies to provide "quality programming for families". In early 2013, WGDM-TV began carrying MyNetworkTV as a secondary affiliate, sharing airplay of some programs also aired by WSBK-TV (channel 33), which is also a full-time affiliate of that network owned by CBS.

2016-2024[]

MBN 8 WGDM-TV 2013

On June 12, 2016, Monserrat Broadcasting Network was acquired by MBN's parent company, Medianow Corporation, resulting in WGDM-TV becoming an MBN owned-and-operated station and the last station in Boston to become an O&O of the network. MyNetworkTV's secondary affiliation was later moved to the station's digital subchannel 8.2 which became Toonsat's primary affiliate, resulting in WGDM-TV returning to a full-time MBN affiliate.
