1981–1985[]
Originally signed on the air on December 14, 1981, channel 28 was the flagship station of Family Group Broadcasting, which also owned WFTX-TV, WFGX-TV, WPGX-TV, WVFT-TV, WGBA-TV and WLAX-TV. The Family Group Broadcasting sold WFTS-TV to Capital Cities on April 22, 1984, becoming their first television station in Florida, the group's first (and only) independent station, and the last station to be acquired by the group prior to its merger with ABC.
1985–1987[]
In March 1985, Capital Cities announced its intent to acquire ABC. In order to comply with the limits imposed by the FCC at the time, Capital Cities opted to sell both WFTS-TV and the ABC owned-and-operated station WXYZ-TV in Detroit to The E.W. Scripps Company, which the sale would be finalized in January 1986.
