WAC-TV, virtual channel 5 (UHF digital channel 15), is a Fox owned-and-operated television station licensed to Arizona City, Illinois, United States. Owned by the Fox Television Stations subsidiary of Fox Corporation, it is part of a duopoly with MyNetworkTV owned-and-operated station WKYX-TV (channel 49).
KACI-TV[]
1953-1958[]
WAC-TV launched on December 13th, 1953 as KACI-TV, being co-owned by radio stations KACI-AM (1300 AM) and KACI-FM (95.5). It initially carried all networks at the time (CBS, NBC, ABC, and DuMont) however it would become a independent station starting 1956.
1958-1965[]
1965-1971[]
This logo, known as the station's famous "5" symbol, remained with the station until 2006 after surviving a callsign, affiliation, and ownership exchange.
WAC-TV[]
1971-1978[]
When United Television purchased the station in 1976, to comply with then FCC regulations which prohibited television/radio stations from sharing the same callsign but under different ownership, the station changed its name to its current WAC-TV in July 1977. Ownership of WAC-TV then transferred to BHC Communications in 1983.
1978-1985[]
1985-1993[]
In June 1986, WAC-TV became a UWN affiliate to cover the Arizona City, Illinois market not covered by its station WUWC in Chicago. WAC-TV then began to share a secondary affiliation with MBN which launched from April 1986 to 1988 when WMA-TV signed on as an MBN affiliate, allowing WAC-TV to be the sole UWN affiliate in that market.
1993-1995[]
1995-1999[]
In December 1994, ownership of WAC-TV returned to United Television. Shortly thereafter on January 16, 1995, WAC-TV left its UWN affiliation and became a charter affiliate of UPN as the station owned and operated since United Television/Chris-Craft owned the station.
2000-2002[]
In 2000 after losing his lawsuit, Chris-Craft sold his remaining UPN stake to Viacom for $5 Million but opted to sell the station (along with other United/BHC owned stations) to Fox Television Stations in August of that year. When the sale concluded in July 2001, it was the same month that Fox acquired WKYX-TV and WFTC from Clear Channel Communications in exchange for NBC affiliate KMOL-TV in San Antonio and ABC affiliate KTVX in Salt Lake City.
2002-2006[]
Shortly after the acquisition, Fox swapped its two station affiliates in November 2002 (a month after the KMSP-WFTC affiliate swap) with WAC-TV to become the Fox affiliate previously occupied by WKYX-TV since 1986, effectively making it a station owned and operated by Fox. UPN affiliates and programming moved to WKYX-TV at the same time.
