It was started on September 17, 1993 as TNT & Cartoon Network, a dual terrestrial channel that operates Turner Network Television at the night and Cartoon Network at the day (both channels had separate cable feeds).

On September 19, 1995, Turner Broadcasting System sold the terrestrial TNT & Cartoon Network to Magnetic Cable Entertainment, a consortium formed by Visa Inc. and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer; each holding a 45% stake in the network, with Turner retaining 10%.
