The film was announced in 2006 under the working title The Kimsons, a film distributed by National Lampoon Inc. The rights for the film was sold to RKO Pictures in 2007.
In September 2007, Rowdy Herrington, try to direct the film. In September 2008, it was reported that Herrington took over Paranormal Princess putting National Lampoon's The Kimsons on hold, and thus postponing its original schedule for a year to a then planned January 2009. The film's final title, National Lampoon's The Kimsons, was revealed in February 2009, along with new co-director, John McTiernan. In March 2009, the film got another delay, being pushed back a year to March 12, 2010, and finally settled at March 31.
