In 1958, WHCA-TV Channel 31 in Lawrence signed on as a full-time satellite of WKCA-TV. WHCA-TV served the northern part of the Merrimack Valley. WHCA-TV and WJSA-TV eventually went dark due to financial troubles, with WJSA-TV going dark in 1967 followed by WHCA-TV in 1979. Almost immediately after WHCA-TV left the air, its transmitter was shipped to Houston, Texas in order to launch its independent sister station, KTEX-TV, also on UHF channel 31. That station would eventually be sold to the Malrite Communications Group in 1986 two years after the sale of all Lowell Telecasters stations to Taylor Communications.
